In the APS you have many opportunities to grow and learn. Being open to learning is critical to your success in your current role, and for your future career. We encourage you to seize the opportunities available through:

  • Experience – learning in and through work, including new and challenging roles, tasks, secondments, rotations, working committees, or acting opportunities.
  • Exposure – learning through relationships, connecting and engaging with people and networks, communities of practice, observing others, receiving feedback, coaching and mentoring.
  • Education – learning through training courses, academic study, reading, and self-directed research.

We manage a number of development opportunities available to APS employees.


JAWUN APS Secondment Program

The APS has partnered with Jawun since 2011 offering secondments to APS employees to work in Indigenous organisations on projects that support Indigenous people and their communities to drive change. During a Jawun secondment you can develop your resilience, self-awareness, collaboration and enabling skills.

  • The Jawun APS Secondment Program - six week secondment to an Indigenous organisation

Open to high performing, highly skilled Executive Level employees

  • Jawun Empowered Communities secondments - six to twelve week secondment.

Open to SES Band 1 and high performing EL2 employees.

Please note that Jawun in-place secondments are temporarily suspended as part of the COVID national response.  Virtual secondments are available and nominations should be made through your agency’s Jawun contact.

Executive coaching

We have established an Executive Coaching register for SES Band 3 employees. 

The register includes a list of executive coaches who are highly qualified and experienced coaching at the SES Band 3 level. Deputy Secretaries can access the register through the GovTEAMS community. The register enables you to select a preferred coach, make contact and engage them in accordance with Commonwealth Procurement Rules and your agency's procurement requirements. for more information


In addition to the courses offered by your department or the APSC, there are a number of more formal opportunities you might like to consider.

Sir Roland Wilson Foundation PhD scholarships 

Available to APS employees between EL1 and EL2 levels.

The Sir Roland Wilson Foundation PhD Scholarship Program is open to Executive Level APS employees to study for a PhD full-time at the Australian National University on issues of national significance.The APS has partnered with the Sir Roland Wilson Foundation to offer scholarships to complete a PhD research program at the Australian National University.

Pat Turner scholarship program - Open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander APS4 - SES Band 1 employees.

Available to Indigenous APS employees between APS4 and SES Band 1 levels.

The Pat Turner Scholarship Program is available to high performing Indigenous APS employees to complete full-time post-graduate study at either the Australian National University or Charles Darwin University.

Public Sector Management Program

Available to APS6 and Executive Level 1 and 2 employees.

The Public Sector Management Program is a post-graduate study course designed for public sector employees to develop management skills in the business of government.

The program award is a Graduate Certificate in Business (Public Sector Management).
